Deconstruction vs Reconstruction

When addressing movement issues, there are two approaches one can take: deconstruction and reconstruction.

Deconstruction focuses on individual parts and treats them in isolation, while reconstruction takes a holistic view of the body and aims to improve movement patterns as a whole.

At Pain Academy, our focus is on the reconstruction approach.

The body is a dynamic system that works together in harmony, and movement patterns can be improved through targeted training and practice.

Deconstruction vs Reconstruction

A deconstruction approach focuses on one area alone. This can lead to ineffective outcomes and compensation can develop that may lead to further issues down the line.

The reconstruction approach identifies the root cause of a problem and develops holistic strategies to address it, making it more effective in addressing movement-related issues.

It takes time, practice, patience, and understanding to move away from a traditional deconstruction approach – so please, don’t feel like you have to have it all figured out. Our goal for you is to move away from looking at individual areas and see how the entire body needs to be approached.

Your Superpower of Adaptation

Adaptation is our body’s ability to become better suited to live whatever lifestyle we live.

This is a huge advantage and can serve us well in many ways. However, it’s in our ability to adapt that gives rise to the problems that have brought you here.

Our bodies are always adapting to various conditions such as sports, jobs, and injuries, which can create movement-related problems and pain if not managed properly.

Muscle Guarding

The nervous system can automatically sense and react to protect the body from harm, such as pulling your hand away from a hot pan or limiting your range of motion to prevent further injury.

Muscle guarding is a defense mechanism where the nervous system creates an internal brace to protect the body from potential harm.

Pain and tension are messages from the brain signaling a deeper problem that needs to be addressed.

Stretching alone may not be enough to improve flexibility if the underlying movement pattern is not corrected, as the nervous system will continue to guard against potential harm.

Your Superpower of Adaptation

By identifying how our bodies adapt and making appropriate changes, we can promote positive changes in our health and well-being.

This guided assessment is designed to help you identify how your body executes fundamental movement patterns and recognize how these patterns may be contributing to pain or dysfunction.

Imbalance, Compensation, and Dysfunction

Imbalance in the body leads to compensation, which is an adaptation that helps us survive through injury or limitation.

While compensation can be helpful in the short term, it can cause excessive wear and tear on soft tissue and joints, leading to further imbalance, injury, and compensation patterns.

Dysfunction occurs when a muscle no longer works due to maladaptation to imbalance, injury, and compensatory movement. This can make it difficult to activate certain muscles, causing joint stiffness and restriction.

It's important to approach dysfunction as a problem to dissolve through consistent gentle motion over time.

Imbalance, Compensation, and Dysfunction

Observing and gathering information on how imbalance, asymmetry, compensation, and dysfunction show up in your body through photos and videos can help identify areas that need attention.

Our Movement Program teaches specific positions and movements to restore function and gradually dissolve dysfunction.

You will use the upcoming assessments to holistically analyze and record your full body’s current state. The same assessments will be used throughout your Movement Program to track your progress.
